Potlakaya Senagapappu Kura-Snake Gourd Chana Dal Curry

Snake gourd(potlakaya) is an Indian vegetable.This belongs to the squash family and can be cooked with lentils and coconut for a delicious side.
Preparation time:30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients:
2 cups of snake gourd(potlakaya) chopped into small pieces.
6 green chilies sliced in half
1/2 cup onions finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
salt to taste
2 teaspoon oil
1/2 teaspoon mustard
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 spring curry leaves
1/2 cup chana dal soaked in water for 30 minutes
2 tablespoons grated coconut
pinch asafoetida
1 clove garlic 

Procedure:
1.Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and curry leaves and let splutter.

2.Add the onions,garlic,turmeric and green chilies and saute for 3-4 minutes.

3.Add the potlakay pieces and the soaked chana dal along with the water.Add salt and asafetida and 3/4 cup of water and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

4.If you need more spice add chili powder.Add coconut and saute for 1 minute and turn off the stove.


Tips:
Pick a snake gourd that is young so you can use it along with the peel.This will provide you lot of fiber.
